The Author

Eve Hufnagel Cone
Eve Hufnagel Cone was born in Okarche, Oklahoma, and lived on a large wheat and cattle farm while attending Holy Trinity Elementary/High School. At sixteen she left for Mount Carmel Academy, Wichita, Kansas, and later went to Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas. Two years later, she joined the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth and taught in community high schools for 15 years, after which she joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Malawi, East Central Africa. On returning to the United States she taught for ten years at John Adams Junior High School in Santa Monica, California. Among her five published chapbooks are Dancing in Straight Lines and These Few Things. Jim and Eve Cone live in the Happy County of San Luis Obispo.

Eve's writing will take you on a journey to times, lands and experiences rarely visited. Her cool distance from the convent, Depression era-Oklahoma and parts of Africa that aren't too friendly to women hides a world of turbulence. Her delivery is like a dream that allows the reader to move above the surface right along with Eve, and feel that they too survived this life, these travels, these details, the told and the untold.

Caron Perkal, Author, Art Director

Spiraling is a moving journey. Eve's vivid imagery takes us from a farm in Oklahoma where she was one of eleven children, through World War II's effect on a small community from the eyes of a child, winds into the sacred chambers of the convent . . . and out . . . into the Peace Corps and beyond. This book is truly, to quote one of her poems, "One Rose"!
